24 Hours to Save the Planet

When it comes to saving the planet, all of us can be superheroes. For inspiration, here's Eden's hour-by-hour guide to going green in just 24 hours.

Earth

6.30am:

Leap out of bed and make breakfast - eggs, bread and milk from the local farm shop.

6.45am:

A quick shower uses much less water than a bath.

7am:

Brush your teeth. Be careful not leave the tap running.

7.30am:

Turn down the central heating thermostat by 1 degree to help save energy.

8am:

Leave for work. The car stays in the garage - cycle to the station. Using public transport helps cut CO2 emissions.

10am:

Work computer has a low energy LCD screen and office lights turn off when no one is in the room.

12.15pm:

Buy lunch at a local shop - choose sandwiches with minimal packaging and a drink in a recycled glass bottle.

12.45pm:

Eat your sandwiches in the park - put all the packaging in recycling bins.

1pm:

Your mobile phone needs recharging. Plug it into a solar charger and leave it in a sunny spot.

3pm:

Go online and calculate how many trees are needed to offset a flight to France for a holiday. Book a train instead.

4pm:

Make your colleagues tea. Be careful not to overfill the kettle since boiling excess water wastes energy.

5.30pm:

Head for home: stop off at a farmer’s market in the high street to buy food.

6.15pm:

Make dinner. Pick fresh salad from your veggie patch. Throw waste into the compost bin.

7pm:

Water the garden and the vegetables with rain water from the butt instead of using the hosepipe.

8pm:

Take waste plastic and bottles to the local recycling centre on a bike.

8.30pm:

Light a wood burning stove - use wood from a local coppiced woodland to heat water.

9pm:

Put your dirty dishes in the dishwasher but don’t switch it on until it’s full.

11pm:

Off to bed. Remember to turn off all electrical equipment that isn’t being used, unplug chargers and switch off the TV at the wall.

11.15pm:

Polish halo, then fall asleep.
